Bud, has this list of "Rules for Life and Things" (#16, #118, #328). Why do you think Bud needed these rules? Do you have any  "Rules for Life and Things" that you live by?

  1. No, I do not have rules that I live by. Bud needed these rules to get out of hot water. Also, why would he need probably more than 328 rules for life and things?

    1. Not one? that's sad. You should at the least have a motivational quote. that's what I have

  2. One of my Rules about life is a famous quote of Micheal Jordan "Talent Wins Games But Teamwork and Intelligence Win Championships." And a quote Vince Lombardi said to his players every day "If Your Not Early Your Late"

  3. I think Bud needed these rules so that he wouldn't be hurt or disappointed again. Kind of like one of my life rules: fool me once - shame on you; fool me twice - shame on me.

  4. One of my life rules is to always try my hardest at whatever I do. I think that Bud needed these rules to help him deal with the tragedy of losing his mother and becoming an orphanm

  5. I think Bud needs these rules because he had made that mistake before and doesn't want to make it again. Also, I think Bud needs these rules because he wants to make a better person out of himself. I have rules, like try your best, be silly, be honest, be kind. Also, a big one is make others happy. The last one is, treat others the way you want to be treated.

    1. Those are good reasons. I agree that he would not want to make a mistake twice.

    2. I know I don't like to make the same mistake a second time. Even though sometimes I do.

  6. I have one rule in life and that is #1. The mind quits before the body. it tells me not to doubt my self even if it hurts. for example if it is super cold I tell my self that it is burning out. If I'am swimming a 500 or a 400 I brake it down into 100. My mom gave me this rule because of when I doubt my self during a set and tolled me that "the mined quits before the body." I have said to my self ever sens.

  7. My "rules for life" came from my mother. She always said, "You can catch more flies with honey!"...which means you can get more people to do things by being nice than being mean. She also said, "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all." I try to remember those rules in my daily life. I think that I am like Bud, that remembering what my mother said helps me remember her!

  8. I think Bud needed these rules because this is the stuff that he thinks will make him tough and make him not do mistakes. I have rules for life that my mom made for me like make your bed.

    1. Wait, what about your restate? Don't you need a restate for the, "why I think bud needs these rules is because he needs to stay on track and focus. You can never start a restate with a question word. For example, you used the word "why". Instead, you could have just sliced that word right off.

  10. I live by the rule," It's about the journey, not the destination." This helps me especially when I compete, because if you think about the destination, only one team or individual is going to be happy.

  11. My rules in life is not to quit before you know whats going to happen and to know that life is not always easy. I think Bud really needs his rules because when he needs something he knows what to do and because he does not have a family, he doesnt have a mom to tell you that he shouldnt do something.

  12. I think Bud has these rules and things so he can have a better live and be a better liar. I think this because Bud said, "What he'd just said is another one of Bud Caldwell's Rules and Things for Having a Funner Life and making a better liar out of yourself. This was Number 87."

  13. Reading Bud's rules to live by is one of my favorite parts of this book. I agree that these quotes help Bud try to understand his life and why things happen to him and help connect him to his mom. I really loved reading the quotes you have chosen for yourselves too. When dealing with difficult situations or people, I try to remember the saying "you can't really know a person until you've walked a mile in their shoes".

    1. That's a good quote. I think it also teaches a lot in just that one sentance.

  14. A rule/thing I live by is "Don't be too confident." because I know if you are too confident you won't put forth any effort, but if you're not confident enough, you won't try.

  15. I Think bud needs these rules to stay focused and live a better life and make a better liar out of himself. I do not have any rules for life.

  16. I think Bud has these rules and things because he wants to remember some things that helped him in life so he wanted to remember them. I do have some of my own they are #1 try to always forgive people you've hurt #2 always make sure you love you siblings and your parents.

  17. My "rules and things" are the ten commandments. This goes with why I moved here. My dad is going to Gateway Seminary, witch is like a Christian collage that gets you ready to be a missionary. But back on topic. I think Bud has his "rules and things" so he can be a better liar. So I agree with Will.

  18. I think Bud has these rules and things because it helps him to remember the right things to say and do to stay out of trouble with the Home or the families he lives with at the foster homes. My “rules for life” are “never say never” and “if you don’t have something nice to say, then don’t say anything at all” . “Never say never” (I think) means don’t predict the future. I think “if you don’t have something nice to say, then don’t say anything at all” means exactly what it is, if you don’t have something nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.

  19. I think Bud needs these rules to live a great fun life and like when he was at the mission,he needed a lie to get in to eat. I do not have any specific rules/things book because I already live a great life.

  20. I mean I do have 1 I can remember and that is never give up

  21. I think Bud needs these rules so he can get out of situations and make himself a good liar. I have one rule for life. live your life the best you can and the way you want because your not going back.

  22. I think Bud believes he needs these rules to protect himself from other people. I visualize each rule as a stone in a wall he has built up around himself as an emotional shield so he won't be hurt again. There are a few rules I try to keep in mind in my life but the one I think of the most is to treat others the way you would want to be treated.

  23. Bud lives a very difficult life for a child. I imagine him making these rules up to feel more secure in his life. It might give his life more structure and a feeling of control over his often difficult circumstances.
I'm sure I have many rules that come to mind only when they come up in my life. One I can think of is to try and not judge or look down on people. When I do that I sometimes find myself in similar situations later on.

  24. Bud needs the rules so he feels like he has structure in his very chaotic life. Structure helps people so they don't "freak out" because they know how they are supposed to react.

My rules to live by include "You become the company you keep so pick wisely." And "its better to look back and say "I can't believe I did that" vs "I wish I would have"... and my latest that my coach told me is "The mind quits before the body. You are stronger than you think!"

  25. Bud has all these rules to protect himself from being hurt. He has learned to be tough in his short life because he hasn't had an easy time. He has experienced some untrustworthy adults, so many of his rules remind him not to be too trusting just yet.
One of my rules to live by is "live and learn". Mistakes will happen. If we learn from them, maybe we won't make them a second time.
